10. Ten. Dieci. X.

a roma

Rome: It’s beautiful and it’s not. Kinda like everything else in life.

“La prossima fermata è Roma Termini.”

I moved to Italy to live at the end of September last year. I lived in Brescia (a medium-sized city in Northern Italy) until March 1, when I moved to Siena.

(I am once again back in Brescia, but that’s a story I’m going to save for another day.)

I picked up some vocabulary during those first five months in Italy, but it wasn’t until I started attending an Italian class for immigrants in Siena that I really started learning the language.

Now, finally!, I understand much of what is being said either to me or around me. The language no longer sounds foreign or like pretty sounds flowing forth from people’s mouths. Although I’m more motivated to learn the language–because it finally seems like an achievable goal to converse fluently–the glossy veneer of the nonsensical musical sounds has dulled. I don’t know, there’s something about understanding when somebody complains about the weather (or conversely, the ease in which I can complain about it) that makes any language sound less romantic.

Shiny glossy veneers are so overrated. Don’t you think? I mean, a veneer is just a thin expensive sheet of wood (or metal) with layers upon layers of unusually toxic clear varnish. If it wasn’t for the common cheap material beneath (like pine or regular mild steel), the veneer would have nothing to attach itself to.

And I’ve always preferred the look of a dull, used or aged finish anyway…and now that I’ve exhausted my analogy I’m finished with this post.

But one more thing before I go to bed on this hot summer night: it is nice to know that you can simply listen to the conductor to know when your next stop is and not have the nervous wondering of whether you’ve missed it or have yet to arrive.

Arrivederci a dopo.

MY DREAM AND VISION

Natural Touch is a Non Governmental Organisation based in Calabar the Eastern part of Nigeria.The inspiration come from a point of observation of handicapped people and Children roaming the streets of some citites in Nigeria mostly in Calabar begging for alms.
Most of them at the end of the day retired to uncompleted buildings to pass the night,It was a very gory site when a reported case of ritual dehumanising killing of two of such people in a street close to my residence.These two were killed and some part of them remove for rituals activities or some other things not quite known to us.

So touched by such inhuman treament to people because of their inability to defend themselves or provide proper accomodation for themselves,and even a source of livelihood was traumatic,hence,my decision to get the NGO (NATURAL TOUCH) started,with the aim to provide food and shelter for the hanicapped.Make sure there is a future for them and security of life for them.

Upon our inception,we had limited our intention to mostly the young ones and average aged.Although we could not provide accomodation for them but we  provide the basic needs which is food for them atleast once a day.

It is our aim to increase the feeding arrangement to twice a day and also build a home for them.It is our aim to accomodate at least 2000-5000 handicapped people of difiers ages in the home,and Animals too.
With support from other Organisations/Individauls that are touched just as we are.We will establish a school or a handicraft centre for them to study and become independent of their own in future.
Suffice to say here that most of them roam the street with torn cloths and look unkept,We also provide clothing where necessary and affordable to them.
Based on our inability to sustain the financial burden,we are looking forward to Groups or Individuals with similar passion as we have towards uplifting the living standard of these hadicapped and also thinking of ensuring their future.

We are planning of building a home for them in Calabar to accomodate the handicapped and also recruit personnels to take care of their cooking and tranining.
We look forward to support  from passionate groups and individuals.
Thanks,
Dennis

A beautiful, creative and inspirational tribute to Buddha created by  K. KRISHNA DAS. This video is a colorful work of art. I sat in awe and wonder as I watched it unfold before me. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Phosphoresce: A Sonnet

James Schwartz

by: James Schwartz

Among his most favored night-time toys
Absinthe, liquor and phosphoresce hair frost
Of all my dream lovers and phantom boys
In reality I’m easily lost
Laughing, intoxicated he will baste
Brown bottles of luminous fire-fly
Anointing his head with celestial paste
Of stars liquidated into hair dye
He is always reckless in his passion
Blithely flinging raver clothes on my bed
As if he’s going out of fashion
A passing diversion until he’s dead
Taking, embracing me until we glow
The colorless mornings drift by so slow.

Farewell: A Tribue to Elem Klimov and Lara Shepitko

I came across Lara Shepitko, a Soviet director who died in an auto accident at the age of 39 in 1979, due to finding her work being released on The Criterion Collection. Slant Magazine has a tribute to Shepitko and her husband and fellow director Elem Klimov.

Limelight Networks: Why the Olympics didn’t ‘Melt’ the Internet

To be perfectly honest, I’m really (pleasantly) surprised the Internet did not crash.  It seems that, even with all the streaming video from the Olympics, the Internet was in no danger of imploding.  ZDNet has more here.

Do We Still Need Assassin?

Today when I finished watching a movie named In Bruges, I got some ideas. This movie is not so exciting, that is, it can’t make your blood boil, you need some patience to watch such movie. But to be honest, you can really learn something from such movie, I can at least.

So what do I learned from it? I realized that maybe we still need assassin in our society. You know, there are some problems that law can solve, I mean, there are some bad guys that doing very evil things but law can’t judge them, under such condition, we nned assassins to judge such guys.

This is what I learned from this movie. What do you think?

Faith

God didn't promise days without pain,
laughter without sorrow,
or sun without rain,
But He did promise strength for the day,
comfort for the tears,
and light for the way.

If God brings you to it,
He will bring you through it.

DECLARATION DE SAINT-LOUIS - 3ème Edition de l’Université d’été de PEACE / Action Solidaire - 13 au 15 Août 2008
About this event: 3 ème Edition Université d’été de PEACE / Saint-Louis

1. Sécurité alimentaire en Afrique : Place et rôle de la jeunesse africaine ;
2. OMD (Objectifs du Millénaire pour le Développement) : Le défi des jeunes ;
3. Changement climatique : Quel comportement pour y remédier ? ;

 Facilitant l’accès des jeunes et des femmes à la terre, et aux crédits ;
 Instaurant des mesures préventives et curatives face aux aléas climatiques ;
 Organisant les filières agricoles et en promouvant les produits locaux face à la concurrence des produits importés fortement subventionnés ;

 La promotion de l’entreprenariat des jeunes ;
 Le soutien de l’Etat aux actions des jeunes ;
 La promotion de l’agriculture paysanne ;
 La suppression de l’exploitation des enfants, afin de garantir une éducation primaire pour tous ;
 La mise en place des mesures incitatives, pour encourager l’éducation primaire des enfants ;
 La décentralisation de l’éducation primaire dans les zones les plus reculées ;
 Le maintien des filles à l’école (discrimination positive) ;
 La valorisation, l’encadrement et la promotion d’activités économiques des femmes ;

 Le reboisement par des espèces adaptées et le suivi ;
 La sensibilisation des populations aux bonnes conduites environnementales ;
 La mise en œuvre des stratégies de développement urbain durable ;
 La diminution ou la réduction d’émission des gaz à effet de serre ;
 La vulgarisation de PANA (Plan d’Action Nationale d’Adaptation au changement climatique) et sa traduction en langues nationales ;
 La promotion des énergies renouvelables ;
 L’adoption des pratiques d’agriculture durable ;
 Les méthodes d’assainissement et de traitement des déchets respectueuses de l’environnement ;

 L’information et la sensibilisation des populations ;
 La réconciliation des intérêts de pays signataires des accords intérimaires avec ceux des pays non signataires ;
 La consolidation et le renforcement de l’intégration africaine ;
 La dénonciation des accords intérimaires ;
 La mise en place des structures de suivi et d’alerte ;

Trust!

A little girl and her father were crossing a bridge.
The father was kind of scared so he asked his little daughter:
"Sweetheart, please hold my hand so that you don't fall into the river." The little girl said:
"No, Dad. You hold my hand."
"What's the difference?" Asked the puzzled father.
"There's a big difference," replied the little girl.
"If I hold your hand and something happens to me, chances are that I may let your hand go. But if you hold my hand, I know for sure that no matter what happens, you will never let my hand go."

In any relationship, the essence of trust is not in its bind, but in its bond..So hold the hand of the person whom you love rather than expecting them to hold yours...

ZuTy Salamander

Zuty Salamander drawing by Bonnee Klein Gilligan © 2008 All rights reserved.

ZuTy the Salamander is a Fire Elemental.

An elemental being or Nature Spirit that lives easily in flames of fire. Fire is the first of the primary elements (fire, earth, air and water) that make up the universe. Fire is symbolic of purification, transformation, passion and aspiration.

ZuTy says, “I AM Fire… I burn, destroy, create, sustain and renew with flame. I AM heat and light. I AM the Sacred Fire, the fire of transmutation and manifestation.  I AM the fire in your body and Soul. I AM androgynous. I AM Fire.”

In October  2007 I was commissioned to draw Zubaluma Taliya, nicknamed ‘ZuTy’ who is one of the fire elementals. The original is 9″ x 12″ pastel on paper.  Giclee prints are available at my Spirit Art Gallery.
