Scouting has a global responsibility in a global world but has an advantage in that it is both global and local.
The famous slogan "Think globally, act locally" easily applies to the Scout Movement. World Scouting is active in many areas of global importance, including:
> Peace and Reconciliation
>Rights of young people and children
>National youth policy
>Non-formal education
>Gender equality
>Humanisation of globalisation
>Sustainable development
>Integrating people with special needs
>Supporting the UN MDG's

Scouting's mission

The mission is to contribute to the education of young people through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Law, and to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society.
This is achieved by:
>Involving them throughout their formative years in a non-formal educational process
>Using a specific method that makes each individual the principal agent of his or her development as a self-reliant, supportive, responsible and commited person.
>Assisting them to establish a value system based upon spiritual, social and personal principles as expressed in the Promise and Law.

A WorldWide Youth Social Force

World Scouting Today,

Scouting develops a sense of personal responsibility for one's own development. The Scout Movement is independent and governed by its own democratic decision-making processes.
While constructively involved in society, Scouting is a non-partisan movement, which does not identify with any political party.
The Youth and younger people learn to live and work together. They are involved in decision making, accepting responsibility, developing cooperation and leadership.
Scouting plays a bigger role in making sure that the issues that are facing the younger generation are handled and are heard thereby making life better for them.
Its therefore imperative that the youth get involved in scouting activities to ensure that they know what the movement is doing for them.
This being the centennial year, it will be a celebration of 100years of community development and non-formal education.

Youth's Misunderstood

Most youth are often misunderstood for their inability to express themselves and sometimes branded as rude or undisciplined. Effective communication skills make the youth improve on their self esteem and become assertive. The reverse brings about low self esteem that is accompanied by a sense of hopelessness in tackling challenges facing them.

Teamwork is very crucial in tackling issues facing the youth. The Youth need to appreciate and relate well with each other's strengths and potential so as to utiilise individual abilities towards achieving team goals.

'Youth Immortality Syndrome'

The challenges facing the youth in Africa are diverse and numerous. They range from drug abuse, dropping out of school, poverty, sexually transmitted diseases/infections and HIV/AIDS. Nonetheless, the greatest challenge for the youth may well be the 'youth immortality syndrome'.
The feeling that 'death does not exist for me', which many young people have greatly attributes to their demise. Due to this attitude, many indulge in many risky behaviours that put their future in jeopardy.

TIG remains an organisation that provides young people with a unique opportunity to build individual responsibilty by contributing to the realisation of their fullest physical, spiritual, emotional, social, intellectual and character potential.
